In early 2022, I got to a point in my career where I was seriously lacking a work/life balance. I loved my job, my team, my customers, the thrills of the constant problem solving, however, the long hours and constant struggle to keep my head above water took a toll. I decided to do a serious internal dive into what really got me excited about my various jobs and the answer was clear: People, solving problems, and making things more efficient. Oh and of course that I absolutely loved the construction industry and had truly found my “type of people”.
From my very first job out of college to pre-ZoKa, regardless of my role, I loved to lead or be a major contributor to software implementation, creating processes/procedures for the company, and bringing teams together. My last role encompassed a large portion of those attributes, but included many other items and restraints that did not speak to me in the same way as they once did. I had voiced my situation to a trusted advisor and he asked that I come work for him. I responded with "Florida is too hot and I live in the north for a reason." He responded with "fine, then start your own company which you have talked about for years and come work for me as a contractor; I need a project management software implemented with standards and someone to run it as I don’t have the internal resources."
Thus, in July of 2022, ZoKa Solutions was born! The Virtual Project Management Office. Shortly after, I spoke with Lauren Stephens (who at this point had worked with me at 3 companies over 10 years) and asked if she would join me. We gave our notice, ended on a Friday three weeks later, and were on a flight to Florida the following Monday to embark on our new adventure.
